Week 2/Week 3
Video on punk and time to read and think/Subcultures and Individualism. Harajuku

Humans are naturally social beans; some crave this more than others. Humans also need to feel a sense of belonging, then on the other end want to be individual. These are contradicting values. Subcultures can offer one all of this; you have a sense of belonging in the culture and feel a sense of uniqueness for your stand. Although some may argue that in contemporary society there is nothing unique about a subculture, is this valid? If one finds a culture that makes them feel a sense of belonging and at the same time they feel a sense of uniqueness in them self isn’t that all that matters?

Although subcultures are fazing out and there are so many slightly different versions of certain subcultures, that is what makes our society so interesting. Mainstream subcultures don’t work anymore, as there is so much variety today. Australia is a multicultural society and so be it.
